American chewing gum banned

RIYADH, 5 February — The Ministry of Commerce has banned the import of a brand of American chewing gum because of rumors that it might contain pork. An Islamic information center suggested on an Internet site that the brand of chewing gum could contain a substance gained from pork. Saudi authorities intend having the chewing gum examined in a laboratory before making a final decision, a Commerce Ministry official said yesterday.
