MAKKAH, 23 February — The Italian ambassador to Riyadh, Torquato Cardeilli, is performing the Haj, just three months after converting to Islam, the Saudi Press Agency reported yesterday.

“I have accomplished one of the important pillars of Islam,” the Italian diplomat said, adding that he made the pilgrimage as a guest of the Muslim World League.

Cardeilli, 60, converted to Islam last November. During his 35-year diplomatic career, Cardeilli, a graduate in linguistics and Oriental civilization who speaks Arabic, has been posted to several Arab countries.

He took up his post in Riyadh in November 2000.
