Pakistan seeks Canada’s help for IT development

TORONTO, 12 April — Pakistan intends to seek Canada’s cooperation in the field of information technology, said visiting Minister for Science and Technology Atta-ur-Rahman here recently.

“We are currently here to explore the possibilities of Canada’s cooperation in information technology and other scientific fields, the minister said while addressing a gathering of experts of information technology and potential foreign investors.

The function was arranged by Pakistan Consul General Iftikhar Ahmed Arain. Rahman said Pakistan is witnessing rapid progress in information technology and added that a lot more is to be done in days to come.

He told the audience that all-out efforts are being made to create a new Pakistan by bringing about revolution in the field of science and technology.

“We are trying to create a new Pakistan where our children could get quality education and at the same time they get the opportunity to serve their own country.”

He pointed out that education is the only difference between Pakistan and the advanced world. “We have to realize this fact and move forward accordingly.”

The minister said that during the past two and a half years genuine efforts have been made to push Pakistan along as far as possible on the road of success in the important IT field‚ and for this, the required infrastructure is being raised in the country.

“Pakistan has taken it as a great challenge to make unprecedented achievements in the field of science and technology,” he said adding that two years ago, the country was nowhere in the IT field.

He further said that Pakistan has launched as many as 350 projects pertaining to science and information technology. Rahman said the present government has initiated very useful research support programs in the country.

Earlier, the consul general introduced the minister and said Rahman is an author and editor of 63 books. Most of his books were published in Europe, USA and Japan.

He has also produced more than 480 research papers in leading international scientific journals.

Arain said 51 students have so far completed their Ph.D courses under the supervision of Rahman.
