AMMAN, 5 May — Feminist activists in Amman plan to set up a symbolic court in summer in Amman to try Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for war crimes committed in the Palestinian territories, one of the activists said yesterday.

Asma Khoder, head of the Jordanian Legal Group for Human Rights (Mizane), told AFP that the trial "will be organized in Amman in two months by Mizane and the Jordanian branch of the international "Sisterhood Global Institute".

"The aim of the trial is not to deliver a verdict but to present to the concerned international parties and to the whole world witness accounts and proof in support of the accusations of war crimes brought against Sharon and the Israeli Army".

The trial will do this by "documenting Israeli crimes and violations", which can later be used to judge Sharon before an international tribunal.

"The trial will be led by female judges from diverse regions of the world: human rights activists or experts in international law, who have not yet been chosen", Khoder said.
