RIYADH, 15 July — Filipino mechanical engineers in the Central Region will be learn about water treatment and metal finishing in a seminar scheduled on Thursday in Riyadh.

The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers-Riyadh Autonomous Region (PSME-Riyadh APU), will conduct the seminar at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Olaya District, starting at 1 p.m.

Dilip Macheska, manager and consultant of METITO Chemicals Industries(MCI), will talk about the proper use of water and water treatment. This includes desalination techniques, involving the use of reverse osmosis to purify water.

In the seminar on metal finishing, Maamoun H. Salahma, manager and consultant of Arab Trading and Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (ATCI), will introduce the latest technology application on metal products.

Fernando F. Tantoco, the society’s director on information technology, said certificates will also be given to those who attended the plant tour at Saudi Dairy Foodstuff Company held last month. The plant tour was an offshoot of the seminar on “Automation for Easy Fluid Control System and Application” held on May 10.

Capping the event will be the grand induction of all new chapter members — life and associate — by Junn U. Berbie, president of PSME-WRC, the Jeddah chapter. Wilfredo Ruiz, one of the past presidents of Jeddah chapter, will deliver an inspirational talk. Also invited to grace the affair was Germinia V. Aguilar-Usudan, vice consul and third secretary of the Philippine Embassy.

George F. Bahaynon, PSME-Riyadh APU president, said all their programs and activities are still being coordinated with the PSME-WRC, its mother chapter.

Membership is open to all Filipino mechanical engineers. Interested parties may contact Bahaynon at 241-1222 or 053262719; Tantoco at 477-3430 or /776351; Riolando V. Perez at 052-827320; Joseph P. Ogania at 052-267956; Pedro P. Caliwag at 056-419578 or Wilfredo T. Tuburan at 056-425369.

Bahaynon said seminars are just part of the group’s programs to provide continuing education for its members. Another component include plant tours. Yesterday, the group brought its members to the Saudi Dairy Foodstuff Company.

“We have chosen a dairy plant to visit so that our members will see the actual application of automated valves in a system in line with what we have learned from our seminar on Automation for Easy Fluid Control System and Application,” explained Bahaynon.

Tantoco, the society’s information technology director, said that the plant tour would give PSME members an overview on how the technology is being applied effectively.

Considered to be one of the biggest industries in the kingdom today, as the group has observed lately, dairy processing plants are acquiring and applying highly advanced technology system for mass production with first-rate quality standard.

“Based on this trend, it is expected that in 3 to 5 years, the Kingdom would be exporting dairy products in different parts of the world,” said Tantoco.

Nestor C. Rollo, PSME’s chairman in charge of the project, coordinated the plant tour with the highly experienced staff of Saudi Daily Foodstuff Company headed by Mussad Al Nassar-Executive Plant Manager, Ejaz Chaundry-Plant Operation Manager, and Omer Farooq, Plant Maintenance Manager.
