JEDDAH, 17 August — Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Kareem, head of the liver transplant center at King Abdul Aziz Medical City, said that organs of only 10 percent of people declared brain dead are utilized in the Kingdom.
He told Al-Riyadh Arabic newspaper that about 400 people are declared brain dead in the Kingdom every year. “But the authorities are informed of only 10 percent cases to use their organs,” he added.
Abdul Kareem said there was considerable shortage of liver donors which he said was due to lack of public awareness on the significance of donating organs of the brain dead.
He pointed out that his center had conducted 150 liver transplant operations since 1990.
