RIYADH, 18 August — The Al-Qaeda organization announced yesterday that it was behind last month’s assassination attempt on Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

In a statement issued through its new website "Islamic Studies & Research Center", the organization said its fighters were carrying more than 250 kilograms of explosives in a car to kill the president and his American bodyguards.

"The explosive-laden car was hit by another car inside Kabul while the fighters were on their way. The police grew suspicious of the driver and arrested two of the fighters while others escaped," the website said. The organization warned that it would not allow the Afghan president and his ministers to live in peace.

Al-Qaeda also claimed that they have "carried out three missile attacks during the past 10 days against the Khost airport, causing heavy losses to US and Afghan forces."
