A friend of mine said he uses a simple trick to deceive the traffic police. They look for motorists who do not use their safety belts and my friend hooks the end of the belt to the gearshift instead of latching it as should be done.
I pointed out to him that he might escape the fine but the basic purpose of the belt — the driver’s safety — is not served and that he will sooner or later be the ultimate loser. Then he said that he resorted to the practice only when driving within the city limits where the traffic is normal or when he has to get out of the car frequently in order to buy things from different shops.
He maintains that the traffic police are only concerned with violators of the regulation inside the city.
It is not practical to check every car closely on the highways except at checkpoints which are normally near cities. Motorists fasten belts just before arriving at the checkpoint and unfasten them after passing.
Several people believe that drivers within the city should be exempt from the safety belt regulations or, at least, be exempted from fines.
On the other hand, motorists on the highways should be checked and violators fined. The traffic department should also institute a number of awards and other inducements for drivers who follow the regulations.
