Construction work near Haram area prohibited

MAKKAH, 26 September — Authorities have banned new construction work in the northern and western areas surrounding the Grand Mosque and in the Qashashiya region, Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed disclosed here yesterday.

Chairing a meeting of the Higher Authority for Development of Makkah, the governor said licenses for new construction work in areas surrounding the holy mosque would be issued after completing studies and plans by the Makkah Municipality.

Prince Abdul Majeed urged the municipality to complete the studies as quickly as possible. "Higher authorities have also approved the principles for planning the central region including the disorganized areas," he said.

The governor said the authority would exert every possible effort to improve services in Makkah.

Traffic week: Prince Abdul Majeed launched the third phase of a nationwide traffic awareness campaign in the Makkah region on Tuesday.

Maj. Gen. Saeed Al-Qahtani, director of police in the Makkah region, said the campaign was aimed at highlighting the significance of third party insurance, which is to become mandatory for all drivers shortly.

"The campaign also aims at correcting wrong behavior of drivers that cause road accidents, putting an end to car thefts and enlightening the public on traffic regulations," the police chief told the gathering.

An operetta, named security, was presented by the information committee of Jeddah police.

The launching ceremony was attended by top officials including Jeddah Governor Prince Mishaal.

Interior Minister Prince Naif launched the traffic campaign in Abha on Saturday.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prince Abdul Majeed met with participants in a coordination meeting of panels set up to develop youth and sports activities in the Kingdom. The governor was briefed on the efforts made by various panels to realize their mission.
