JEDDAH, 29 October — Salt and pepper, the most common ingredients used to make dishes spicy, is the name of a new restaurant that opened at Kababish along Prince Majed Street here on Wednesday.

The project, executed after a year long planning, is located in an area dominated by Subcontinent residents, where at least a dozen other restaurants exist.

With the clientele Salt n’ Pepper is already attracting since its opening, one is tempted to ask whether it is an instant success. "You see for yourself," says Mohammad Iqbal, the brains behind the restaurant who is credited for the success a chain of Fine Sweets outlets — one each in Makkah and Madinah, and four across Jeddah.

Participating in the inauguration were Essam Beiruti, Atta Ullah Mughal and Saqib Khan.

A striking feature of the restaurant, which has spacious and segregated seats for men, women, families and parties, is its café serving fresh juices, hot and cold beverages, and snacks. It also has lunch and dinner buffets offering a variety of soups, and Pakistani, Chinese and Continental dishes aside from salads and desserts. For example, its lunch menu includes chicken Thai and lentil soups, moti pulao, fish handi, chicken karahi and mutton hara masala.

Chinese delicacies include prawns fried rice and chicken garlic sauce, and continental dishes like spaghetti bolognaise and shish taouk.

On offer is a wide selection of appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and international, Chinese and Subcontinental dishes aside from BBQ, vegetarian curries, rice, nans and sweets.

Asked about expansion plans, Iqbal said: "It all depends on the success of this restaurant. We’ll surely think of opening more outlets in the holy cities and in Riyadh and the Eastern Province."

Listed under the favorites row are prawns masala, fish handi, chicken ginger handi, chicken or mutton karahi, mutton qurma badami, achar gosht and mutton palak. Chinese corner has sweet and sour fish, chicken chilly dry, chicken Manchurian, chicken garlic sauce, chicken pineapple, beef chili mushroom and vegetable, beef hot sauce, chicken or vegetable chowmien, special rice, egg fried rice, masala fried rice and steamed rice.

International selections include lobster thermidor, baked pomfret, fish and chips, tariyaki chicken, grilled chicken American, chicken Maryland, chicken shashlik, mixed grill, grilled lamb chops, fillet steak and spaghetti bolognaise or Neapolitan.

Arabic salad dominates the salad varieties that include Russian, dixi, chicken Waikiki, coleslaw and fresh green varieties. Additionally, there are club and tuna sandwiches, and chicken and Holstein burgers.

"It has all ingredients of a success story," said a guest at the restaurant.
