KUWAIT, 20 December 2002 – Saudi Arabia needed extra effort to defeat Lebanon 1-0 in the Prince Faisal ibn Fahd championship for the Arab Cup here yesterday.

Bandar Tamim scored the match-winner in the second minute of the extra time after the two teams had played out a goalless 90 minutes. The victory, the second for the Kingdom, helped Saudi Arabia lead the group with six points. Syria are second with three points, while Bahrain is at the third place ahead of Lebanon in the four-team group.

In another match, Bahrain won 2-0 against Syria. Ahmad Hassan Taleb and Rashid Al-Dosary scored for Bahrain.

Meanwhile, an angry Jeddah-based soccer-club president expelled a Bahraini player from the club roster following ‘unacceptable behavior’ by the player during the championship.

Saudi Arabia had beaten Bahrain 2-1 in the match. Dawood also struck the Bahraini player with his ukal (the cord tying the ghuthra).
