Joy riders attack cop

JEDDAH, 10 January 2003 — A policeman fired on a group of joy riders here who tried to attack him when he tried to break up their illegal activity, a newspaper reported yesterday.

The youths refused to heed the policeman’s order to leave the area, and then tried to attack him. He then pulled out his gun is self-defense, Al-Watan said.

The police officer received a report that groups of young people were causing a disturbance near the Bin Mahfooz mosque in the Al-Montazahat district of the city.

One of the boys was arrested at the scene, but when the police officer tried to get him into the car the other youths started to intimidate the officer.

The situation then escalated when they tried to physically attack him. It was at that point that the policeman drew his gun and shot one of them in the leg.

The injured youth was taken to hospital but later released.
