RIYADH, 26 January 2003 — The majority of beggars in Saudi Arabia are non Saudis, a recent study revealed, according to the Al-Madinah newspaper. According to police, most people caught begging are overstayers.
The study also put the percentage of Saudis caught begging at 17-38%, and the percentage of non-Saudis held for begging at 62-83%. Four new anti-beggary offices have been opened, two in Makkah, one in Riyadh and another in Madinah to curb this social menace. The addition of these four offices brings the total number of anti-beggary office in the Kingdom to 12.
