RIYADH, 3 February 2003 — A Saudi policeman was slightly injured in a shootout with a suspected criminal who resisted arrest and took shelter in a furnished apartment building, Al-Riyadh newspaper reported yesterday.
The gunman opened fire with an automatic rifle when police surrounded the building by a highway just outside Riyadh, the paper said.
The man was arrested after a sniper shot him in the leg early Saturday. The policeman was wounded in the hand when he fell on the ground trying to avoid the bullets, Al-Riyadh said.
Police are investigating if the man was linked to four gunmen who on Jan. 23 killed a Kuwaiti soldier and wounded three Saudis, including two police officers, before fleeing.
