Guantanamo Detainees Attempt Suicide

RIYADH, 24 February 2003 — A defense lawyer for a number of Saudis detained by US authorities at Guantanamo Bay yesterday called on the Red Cross to investigate increasing suicide attempts by inmates. In a statement, Kateb Al-Shemmary said he had submitted a memorandum to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Kuwait last week urging it “to intervene with US authorities to find a humanitarian solution for the prisoners.”
