RIYADH, 24 February 2003 — Sports activities should be used not only to promote physical fitness but unity and camaraderie as well.

This was the gist of a speech by Cultural Attaché Carmelita Hidalgo of the Philippine Embassy during a speech to the Parents and Teachers Association of the International Philippine School in Riyadh (IPSR-PTA) recently.

“I hope this will serve as an example for all Philippine community schools in the Kingdom,” Hildago said, citing the united effort shown by the parents. She spoke during the concluding ceremonies of the IPSR-PTA’s first Mini Olympic Games on Feb. 14.

Four teams competed in various events, with the Blue team topping the basketball event, followed by the Red, Green and Yellow teams, respectively. Yellow won in Men’s Volleyball, followed by the Blue, Green and Red teams, respectively.

Amen Panolong, the PTA president, said the games were primarily sponsored by the Philippine Airlines and Amican Tours.
