RIYADH, 27 February 2003 — The US Embassy here said yesterday the fatal shooting of a British national in Riyadh on Feb. 20 was a terrorist attack.
“Based on preliminary results of the ongoing investigation into this tragic event, we believe that it was a terrorist act directed at a Westerner who was randomly selected as a target of opportunity,” said a warden message posted on the embassy’s website.
“We believe the individual currently under arrest for the murder of the British national has associations with known terrorist elements,” said the message.
It added that the attack “highlighted the nature of the threat” that currently existed in Saudi Arabia.
