DAMMAM, 2 March 2003 — Police yesterday prevented a 21-year-old Saudi woman from committing suicide. She was spotted standing on the roof of a building by a pedestrian on the street below, who called the police. An ambulance was soon on the scene, but rescue services and the police themselves were slower in their response. A crowd gathered around the building and tried to dissuade the girl from ending her life. Eventually, a policeman arrived and was able to distract the girl so that others could grab hold of her. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
