SAKAKA, 26 March 2003 — One traffic officer was killed and his colleague injured in a shooting incident near a school in Sakaka, capital of the northern Jouf region.
This is the third such incident in Sakaka in less than seven months. The city previously witnessed the murder of the region’s deputy governor and a Shariah court judge.
Jouf police director told the Saudi Press Agency that yesterday’s shooting took place at 1.15 p.m., adding that security agents were investigating the incident.
“A team from the traffic department in Jouf, which had completed its work near a school on Palestine Street in Sakaka’s Moaqela district, came under fire,” the police chief said. “The incident,” he said, “resulted in the death of one of the officers and injury to another.”
Last month, Hamad Al-Wardi, 50, the deputy governor of the region, was killed when an unidentified gunman riddled his car with bullets while he was driving to work early in the morning. The motive of the shooting is unknown.
