WASHINGTON, 27 March 2003 — A second US soldier has died from injuries sustained in a “friendly” grenade attack by a fellow soldier at a base in Kuwait, the US military said yesterday. Major Gregory L. Stone, a reservist with the Idaho Air National Guard, was pronounced dead Tuesday at a US Army field hospital in Kuwait, the National Guard base in Boise, Idaho said.

The grenade attack over the weekend at a base in Kuwait killed an additional soldier and wounded at least 11 others. The military has arrested Sgt. Asan Akbar of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and sent him to Germany to await military charges, on suspicion of throwing four grenades into a tent. He is also suspected of waiting outside the tent and shooting at soldiers as they tried to escape the blasts.
