JEDDAH, 3 April 2003 — An unidentified person was killed and three others were seriously injured when a vehicle exploded on Al-Kharj Road on Tuesday evening, Al-Jazeera Arabic newspaper reported yesterday.
Security officers cordoned off the area soon after the blast, which took place in an open area, the paper said. The vehicle was carrying exhaust pipes, old iron and possibly shell casings.
Body parts of the man killed in the incident were scattered in the area as a result of the blast, the paper reported. The injured have been admitted to Al-Iman General Hospital.
Witnesses disagreed as to the cause of the blast, some suggesting it was accidental.
Meanwhile, one person was killed and 15 others were injured when a Kuwaiti bus carrying Egyptians overturned in Al-Jouf, Al-Eqtisadiah reported.
Saud ibn Moedi Al-Rees, director of Saudi Red Crescent Society in Jouf, told the business daily that the person died from head injuries in hospital after.
Mamdouh Al-Thalj, public relations manager at the society, confirmed that all the 45 passengers on the bus were Egyptians who were on their way to Dhuba Port near Tabuk to catch a ship to the Egyptian port of Safaga.
The society sent three rescue teams to the site and transported the injured to the Domat Al-Jandal Hospital.
“Most of the injuries were minor,” Thalj said.
