SEVILLE, Spain, 22 May 2003 — Porto won the UEFA Cup yesterday when Derlei Silva scored a dramatic silver-goal winner five minutes from the end of extra time to give them a 3-2 victory over 10-man Celtic.
The Brazilian striker lashed home his second goal of the night to settle a thrilling encounter at the Stadio Olimpico and give Porto their first European trophy since 1987.
Celtic had recovered from 1-0 and 2-1 down as Swedish striker Henrik Larsson twice canceled out goals for Porto by Derlei and Dmitri Alenitchev in normal time.
The Scottish side were then rocked five minutes into extra time when defender Bobo Balde was sent off after earning a second yellow card.
Derlei made them pay with his 12th goal in the competition this season just when a penalty shootout was looming as Porto became the first Portuguese club to lift the UEFA Cup.
Dynamo Edge Shakhtar to Go Top in Ukraine
In Kiev, Dynamo Kiev edged Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 yesterday to overtake their bitter rivals at the top of the Ukrainian premier division table.
Dynamo, on 61 points from 26 games, now lead Shakhtar by a point with four rounds of matches remaining.
Ukraine international Serhiy Popov put Shakhtar in front with a long-range effort in the 30th minute, but Maxim Shatskikh leveled the score just before the break.
Dynamo then went ahead 12 minutes into the second half when Shakhtar defender Adrian Pukanych inadvertently hit the back of his own goal following a Valentin Belkevich cross.
The match was brought forward three days to allow both sides enough rest before they meet again in the Ukrainian Cup final on Sunday.
It will be a repeat of last year’s emotional cup final, won by Shakhtar 3-2. It was Dynamo’s first game since the death of their long-time coach Valery Lobanovsky on May 13 following a stroke.
A week later, Shakhtar beat Dynamo again, this time 2-0 in a league match, to clinch their first Ukrainian title and break Dynamo’s nine-year championship reign.
Controversial Ecuadorean Ref Moreno Suspended Again
In Quito, Ecuador’s controversial World Cup referee Byron Moreno, who had just returned from a 20-game domestic ban, was suspended again for his latest performance, the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) said yesterday.
Moreno, who was in charge of the stormy second-round match between South Korea and Italy at last year’s World Cup, dismissed three players from visiting Deportivo Quito during their 1-1 draw at Deportivo Cuenca on Sunday.
The FEF said in a statement that Moreno had been banned for one match after being given a “low mark” for his performance.
Quito complained their players had been sent off unfairly, while Cuenca accused Moreno of denying them several penalties.
“I’m upset and indignant at the mark I’ve been given,” Moreno told the web site of the daily newspaper El Universo. “I think there’s a persecution against me.”
It was Moreno’s third match back following the previous ban, which was imposed in September after he added on 12 minutes of injury time during the game between Liga de Quito and Barcelona.
Liga de Quito took advantage as they scored in the 99th and 101st minutes to win 4- 3. Moreno, who at the time was a candidate in elections for Quito’s city council, was accused of mixing sport and politics by Guayaquil-based Barcelona.
Moreno became public enemy number one in Italy after his performance in their match against South Korea, when he sent off striker Francesco Totti and disallowed an Italian goal before the Asian hosts won 2-1.
Ecuadoreans, however, rallied behind Moreno and he was given a standing ovation when he took the field for his first domestic game after returning home.
