SANAA, 3 June 2003 — FBI Director Robert Mueller continued his counterterrorism tour to Yemen yesterday, meeting its president and raising the possibility of opening an FBI office in the country.
Mueller met with President Ali Abdullah Saleh in the southern port city of Aden.
Yemen’s official news agency said Mueller and Saleh discussed bilateral relations and cooperation in combating terrorism.
The agency said Mueller’s stop in Yemen was part of a regional tour “to discuss the global struggle against terrorism.”
The US Embassy said Mueller and Saleh discussed the possibility of establishing “a legal office at the US mission in Sanaa.”
A US diplomat told AP that the “legal office” would be an FBI office, which was expected to open soon.
He did not elaborate.
Mueller arrived in Yemen from Saudi Arabia where he lauded Saudi efforts in the war on terror.
Mueller later left yemen, but his destination was not known.
