PARIS, 6 June 2003 — A Moroccan suspected of having links to a Germany-based extremist group that helped plot the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 has been arrested in the Paris region, a source close to France’s intelligence services said yesterday.

The man, 34-year-old Karim Mehdi, was taken before a top anti-terrorist prosecutor later yesterday after being held for four days, the source said.

Mehdi was arrested by the DST intelligence services at Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport on Sunday while he was in transit on a flight headed from Germany to the French Indian Ocean territory of Reunion Island, the source said.

He is believed to have had links to a group of extremists in the German city of Hamburg.
