Hampton, Braves Outduel Mariners

SEATTLE, 16 June 2003 — Much-traveled Mike Hampton outdueled veteran Jamie Moyer as the Atlanta Braves edged the Seattle Mariners 3-1 in Interleague action on Saturday.

Hampton (3-3), who is playing for his fourth team in five years, tossed seven innings of two-hit ball for the win.

He got a lot of help from closer John Smoltz, who allowed a run in two innings, that coming after the Mariners filled the bases in the eighth with no outs.

The 40-year-old Moyer (10-3) had his seven-game win-streak snapped, with Gary Sheffield doing much of the damage.

Sheffield’s first-inning single got Atlanta on the board.

He later doubled and came around to score the Braves’ third run.

Yankees 13 Cardinals 4

In New York, the Yankees got three runs in their first at-bats before rain stopped the game for nearly 1 1/2 hours, then continued to pour it on after play resumed, drubbing the St. Louis Cardinals 13-4.

In form Hideki Matsui doubled off loser Matt Morris (7-4) with the bases loaded to get the Yanks off to a fast start, then knocked in fourth run with a second-inning single.

Jason Giambi plated four more Yankee runs with a pair of home runs.

Former Yankee Tino Martinez also homered twice, the first off Andy Pettitte (6-6), to score all four St. Louis runs.

Dodgers 5 Indians 2

In Cleveland, Dave Ross homered and singled to plate three runs as the Los Angeles Dodgers dumped the Indians 5-2.

Andy Ashby (1-4) worked the minimum five innings for his first win of the campaign, Indians starter Brian Tallet (0-1) taking the loss. The Dodgers’ Paul Lo Duca doubled late to extend his hitting steak to 22 games.

Cubs 4 Blue Jays 2

In Toronto, Moises Alou’s first-inning triple led to three Cubs runs and Chicago hung on to down the surging Blue Jays 4-2.

Alou’s three-bagger was served up by Doug Davis (3-4), who went six innings.

Mark Prior (8-2) notched the victory despite surrendering Carlos Delgado’s major league-best 22nd home run.

Athletics 5 Expos 4

In Oakland, Scott Hatteberg belted a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the A’s rallied to overcome the Montreal Expos 5-4. Hatteberg tagged Luis Ayala (5-2), the win going to reliever Ricardo Rincon (3-3), who tossed a perfect eighth.

Pirates 12 Devil Rays 9

In a brawl-marred game in St. Petersburg where four players were ejected, the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a six-game losing streak, outlasting the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 12-9. The D-Rays scored six times in their final at-bats to make it close.

Tigers 9 Rockies 7

In Detroit, the Tigers finally got into the win column after eight straight losses, downing the Colorado Rockies 9-7.

Eric Munson was the hitting hero, his three-run homer in the sixth inning putting Detroit ahead to stay.

Wil Ledezma (2-2) notched the victory in relief of luckless Mike Maroth, still 1-11.

Red Sox 8 Astros 4

In Boston, David Ortiz doubled in the fifth off Tim Redding (4-5) to clear the bases and send the Red Sox on to an 8-4 win over the Houston Astros, who dropped their third straight game after no-hitting the Yankees on Wednesday.

Derek Lowe (7-3) worked 7 1/3 innings, scattering nine hits, for the win.

Brewers 8 Orioles 3

In Baltimore, Richie Sexson belted his 21st homer to put the Brewers on the board and Milwaukee never looked back, drubbing the Orioles 8-3.

Sexson’s blast was off loser Jason Johnson (5-3), who beaned him his next time up, causing the two to exchange words.

Ruben Quevedo (1-2) went seven full frames to earn the decision.

Diamondbacks 9 Twins 2

In Minneapolis, Luis Gonzalez doubled to plate two runs and launch a six-run fifth inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks thumped the division-leading Twins 9-2.

Joe Mays (7-4) was charged with eight of the D-Backs’ nine runs to take the loss, the win going to Arizona starter Miguel Batista (4-3).

White Sox 6 Padres 5

In Chicago, Frank Thomas took Padres reliever Jay Witasick (0-1) deep with a man aboard in the eighth to give the White Sox a come-from-behind 6-5 win over San Diego.

Sox reliever Tom Gordon (4-5) was credited with the win, with Billy Koch finishing up for his eighth save.

Giants 7 Royals 4

In Kansas City, Edgardo Alfonzo drove in four runs with a single, double and sacrifice fly as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Royals 7-4 to leave them at .500 once again (32-32). Damian Moss (now 7-4 after a 5-0 start) worked 6 1/3 innings for the victory, the loss charged to Royals rookie reliever Les Walrond (0-1).

Rangers 13 Marlins 2

In Arlington, after being held scoreless at home in consecutive games for the first time in their history, the Texas Rangers responded in style, scoring six times in the first three innings on their way to an 13-2 romp over the Florida Marlins. Seven different Rangers knocked in runs, with Mark Teixeira plating three on three hits.

Ismael Valdes (6-2) was the beneficiary of the Texas outburst, with rookie Tommy Phelps (2-2) getting knocked about to take the loss.

Angels 13 Mets 3

In Anaheim, Garret Anderson homered twice to plate four runs and Brad Fullmer added a grand slam as the Angels crushed the New York Mets 13-3.Both tagged first-time starter Jason Roach (0-1), who was given a baptism of fire into the major league.

Phillies 12 Reds 2

In the day’s only National League game in Cincinnati, the Philadelphia Phillies pushed across 10 runs with one out in the ninth to crush the Reds 12-2.
