MANAMA, 22 June 2003 — Two Bahraini journalists went on trial yesterday accused of publishing without authorization a report that three suspected terrorists had been freed on bail.
The public prosecution pressed charges against Mansur Al-Jamri, editor of Al-Wassat newspaper, and Hussein Khalaf, a reporter with the daily.
Numerous other journalists, human rights activists and politicians attended the opening day of the trail at a Manama court.
After the charges were read out, the court adjourned until July 1 to allow the defense to prepare its case.
Charges have been dismissed against three of five Bahrainis accused of belonging to a terror cell for lack of evidence, their lawyer said at the start of the month.
