Yankees Overcome Mets Home and Away in One Day

NEW YORK, 30 June 2003 — Hideki Matsui hit a grand slam homer run and Roger Clemens won his 301st game as the New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets 7-1 in the first game of a unique two park doubleheader in Interleague play on Saturday.

Matsui drove in a career-high five runs and Clemens was solid for eight innings as the Yankees won their fifth straight game in the opener at Yankee Stadium.

The teams then took the bus cross-town to Shea Stadium for the second game.

In the nightcap, the Yankees almost blew a 9-0 lead but hung on to edge the Mets 9-8 to complete the sweep. It was just the second two-park doubleheader in the majors since 1903. The Mets and Yankees played a similar twin-bill in 2000.

Clemens (8-5) allowed one run on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk to win for the first time since his 300th career win at Yankee Stadium June 13.

Derek Jeter added three hits to the game one attack, while Alfonso Soriano scored twice and added two hits.

In the nightcap, Soriano, Jeter and Jason Giambi all homered for the Yankees, who led 9-0 in the sixth inning. Brandon Claussen (1-0) went 6 1/3 innings in his debut, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits.

Mariano Rivera pitched two innings and got his 13th save, giving up one run on two hits. Roger Cedeno and Ty Wigginton homered for the Mets, while Raul Gonzalez added a three-run triple in the eighth.

In Toronto, rookie Claudio Vargas and four relievers combined on a five-hitter as the Montreal Expos edged the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2. Vargas (5-3) allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 6 2/3 innings.

In Cleveland, rookie Rainer Olmedo drove in four runs and had three hits to lead the Cincinnati Reds past the Indians 5-4. Chris Reitsma (7-2) got the win as the Reds won for the 20th time in their final at-bat.

Giants 8 Athletics 7 (10 innings)

In San Francisco, Pedro Felix drove in the winning run with a 10th inning single as the Giants rallied from an early six-run deficit to beat the Oakland Athletics 8-7.

In Arlington, Jeriome Robertson and three relievers combined on a six-hitter as the Texas Rangers blanked the Houston Astros 2-0. Robertson (6-3) allowed five hits over six innings, striking out three and walking two to win his fifth straight decision.

White Sox 7 Cubs 6

In Chicago, D’Angelo Jimenez drove in the winning run with a ninth inning single, leading the White Sox past the Cubs 7-6.

Aaron Rowland homered for the Sox, while Carlos Lee had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Billy Koch (4-4) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

In Detroit, Brandon Webb tossed a complete game seven-hit shutout as the Arizona Diamondbacks won their franchise-record 10th straight game, 7-0 over the Detroit Tigers. Webb (4-2) struck out two and walked one. Luis Gonzalez had two hits and drove in three runs, while Chad Moeller had two hits and two RBI.

Devil Rays 9 Braves 7

In Tampa, Damian Rolls had two hits and drove in three runs as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays got by the Atlanta Braves 9-7.

Marlon Anderson and Aubrey Huff both drove in two runs for the Devil Rays, while Carl Crawford had three hits.

Marlins 10 Red Sox 9

In Boston, Mike Lowell hit a three-run homer in the ninth to complete a comeback from a 9-2 deficit as the Florida Marlins edged the Red Sox 10-9. Juan Encarnacion also homered for Florida and drove in three runs.

Twins 5 Brewers 2

In Minneapolis, Torii Hunter had three hits including a homer to lead the Minnesota Twins past the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2.

Corey Koskie also homered for Minnesota, while Luis Rivas had three hits and drove in a run.

Phillies 9 Orioles 5

In Baltimore, Placido Polanco had four hits and drove in three runs as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Orioles 9-5.

Jim Thome, Ricky Ledee and Tomas Perez all homered for Philadelphia.

Cardinals 13 Royals 9

In Kansas City, Jim Edmonds had two homers and two doubles and drove in three runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Kansas City Royals 13-9.

Rockies 5 Pirates 4

In the lone National League game, Preston Wilson had two hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Colorado Rockies past the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4.
