DETROIT, 1 July 2003 — Robby Hammock hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to power the Arizona Diamondbacks to their 11th straight win, a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers in Interleague play on Sunday.
Hammock had three hits and drove in three runs on the day as the D-Backs extended their franchise record-winning streak. The Tigers lost for the ninth straight game and have dropped 21 of their past 23 games.
Carlos Baerga had three hits and drove in a run for Arizona, while Luis Gonzalez also had three hits. Steve Finley also homered for the Diamondbacks, who overcame a 3-1 deficit in the sixth inning.
Reliever Eddie Oropesa (2-1) tossed two shutout innings to earn the win. Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless 10th for his ninth save.

In San Francisco, Eric Byrnes hit for the cycle, going five-for-five, as the Oakland Athletics beat the Giants 5-2.
Byrnes hits included his 11th homer of the season and he drove in two runs to become the second player this season in the majors to hit for the cycle.

In Chicago, Kerry Wood tossed a four-hitter over eight inning to help the Cubs end a four-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the White Sox. Wood (8-5) allowed two runs while striking out seven and walking six. Moises Alou and Jose Hernandez both homered for the Cubs. Esteban Loaiza (11-3) went seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

In Kansas City, Albert Pujols hit two homers, had four hits and had three RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals routed the Royals 13-6.
Jim Edmonds drove in three runs for the Cards, who lost J.D. Drew and Joe Girardi, who were hurt on the same play, along with Ken Harvey of K.C. Brett Tomko (4-5) went seven innings for the win, allowing four runs on seven hits.

In Cleveland, rookie Jason Davis pitched 7 2/3 strong innings to lead the Indians past the Cincinnati Reds 3-1. Davis (7-6) allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Danys Baez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save.

In Toronto, Tomo Ohka pitched a two-hitter after allowing no hits over 6 2/3 innings as the Montreal Expos thumped the Blue Jays 10-2. Ohka (7-7) allowed two unearned runs while striking out four in his complete game. Ron Calloway had three hits and drove in four runs while Jose Vidro homered and scored three runs, as the Expos scored six runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

In St. Petersburg, Russ Ortiz pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings to lead the Atlanta Braves past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 2-0. Ortiz (10-4) allowed just three hits while striking out four and walking two. John Smoltz got the last four outs for his 29th save.

In Baltimore, Jim Thome homered and Jose Mesa became the Philadelphia Phillies all-time save leader in a 4-3 win over the Orioles. Placido Polanco had two hits and an RBI for the Phillies, while Kevin Millwood (9-6) allowed three runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings before Mesa got the last three outs for his 17th save and 104th in a Phillies uniform.

In Boston, Gabe Kapler and Todd Walker both homered twice to lead the Red Sox over the Florida Marlins 11-7. Kapler had three hits and four RBI, while Walker had three hits and three RBI. Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek also homered for Boston, while Derek Lowe (9-3) allowed six runs on five hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts for the win.

In Minneapolis, Cristian Guzman’s infield single scored Luis Rivas from second base in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Minnesota Twins a 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Lew Ford and Guzman both had two hits and drove in a run for the Twins.

In Houston, Alex Rodriguez’s two-run triple broke a tie and led the Texas Rangers past the Astros 8-5.Rafael Palmeiro hit his 509th career homer for Texas, while Kevin Mench had two hits and drove in three runs. Rosman Garcia (1-0) got the win with one shutout inning and Ugueth Urbina got the last out for his 21st save.

In Anaheim, Darin Erstad had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Angels past the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1. Aaron Sele (4-6) pitched five shutout innings, allowing four hits. Troy Percival allowed one run on two hits in the ninth for his 16th save. Odalis Perez (4-7) went six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.

In Seattle, Rondell White hit a grand slam homer to key a six-run ninth inning rally, leading the San Diego Padres past the Mariners 8-6. Keith Lockhart drove in the other two ninth inning runs, while Mark Loretta had four hits and drove in a run.

In New York, Jason Giambi hit a three-run homer to lead the Yankees to a 5-3 win over the Mets, giving the Yankees a sweep of this year’s six-game Subway Series.
Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada homered back-to-back to complete the Yankees five-run third inning that erased an early 3-0 Mets lead, giving the Yankees their seventh consecutive victory.
