JEDDAH, 6 July 2003 — The families of security officers killed in clashes with militants over the past few months will be given substantial financial compensation on the orders of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd, the Saudi Press Agency said yesterday.

Those wounded in the clashes are to be promoted to the next rank, while those killed will be promoted posthumously.

Families of officers who lost their lives will be granted emergency aid of SR100,000 and will be given a house in any part of the Kingdom to a maximum value of SR500,000.

The government will also pay debts owed by those killed, provided they do not exceed SR500,000, and will pay a monthly salary of SR3,000 to their families.

The king also said that one son of any officer killed in action could take up their father’s job, provided they fulfill the required conditions.

Wounded servicemen will receive emergency aid of SR100,000.

The servicemen are also to receive medals for their work.

Several securitymen were killed or wounded in a series of clashes with militants that followed the May 12 suicide bombings of foreign housing complexes in Riyadh that killed at least 35 people, including several bombers.

About 124 suspects were arrested and several others killed in the crackdown, in which large quantities of arms, grenades and munitions were seized.
