HAIL, 12 July 2003 — A court in Hail has sentenced a lawyer to 15 days in jail and 50 lashes after he cursed the judge. The lawyer was pleading a case over undeveloped land in Sababa. The decision came after the independent counsel acting on behalf of the municipality swore at the judge reviewing the case.
According to the transcript, the lawyer said: “The judge who issued the summons is a blind man and does not know what he is doing.”
The lawyer is also on record as repeatedly saying employees of the municipality “are lining their own pockets,” according to a report in Al-Eqtisadiah daily.
Two Executed: A Pakistani national convicted of drug trafficking and a Saudi found guilty of murder were executed in the Kingdom yesterday.
Pakistani Omar Khaleq Abdul Khaleq, who was found guilty of attempting to bring heroin into the Kingdom, was executed in Riyadh, an Interior Ministry statement carried by SPA said.
Ali ibn Zuheir Al-Qorni, a Saudi, was executed in Makkah. He was convicted of murdering a man following a land dispute.
