CLEVELAND, Ohio, 12 July 2003 — Jody Gerut drove in the winning run with a single in the 10th inning as the Cleveland Indians edged the New York Yankees 3-2 on Thursday. The Indians won two of the three games from the Yankees, winning their first series over New York at Jacobs Field since 1994. Gerut grounded a pitch from Sterling Hitchcock through a drawn-in infield to score Coco Crisp from third base and give the Indians the victory.
Hitchcock (0-2) gave up the winning run and a pair of hits without recording an out in the 10th inning. Jason Boyd (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the win. Jorge Posada had two hits and scored the tying run in the seventh inning for the Yankees. Casey Blake had three hits for the Indians.

In Detroit, Nat Cornejo tossed eight scoreless innings to lead the Tigers to a 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. Cornejo (4-7) gave up seven hits in the win before Chris Mears recorded the final two outs for his third save. In Oakland, Eric Chavez drove in two runs to help the A’s to a 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Scott Hatteberg was three-for-five with a run scored. He also drove in the A’s first run with a double in the first inning. Mark Mulder (12-6) worked the complete game — his seventh of the season — holding the Devil Rays to a pair of runs and five hits. Rocco Baldelli gave the Devil Rays an early lead with a solo homer in the first inning before Jorge Sosa (2-7) gave up five runs and 11 hits in six innings for the loss.

In Anaheim, Garret Anderson hit a pair of two-run homers to give the Angels a 7-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Anderson homered in the first and fifth innings while Adam Kennedy added a solo shot in the fifth. Aaron Sele (6-6) picked up his third straight win after allowing one run and four hits in five innings.

In Texas, Juan Gonzalez clubbed a pair of home runs, including a three-run drive in the first inning, to power the Rangers to a 9-4 win over the Minnesota Twins. Michael Young, with a three-run shot in the fifth inning, and Mark Teixeira, with a solo blast in the sixth, also homered for the Rangers. John Thomson (6-9) gave up two runs and scattered eight hits across seven innings for the win.

In Toronto, Bill Mueller stroked four hits, including an RBI triple that helped the Boston Red Sox to a 7-1 win over the Blue Jays. In Seattle, Sidney Ponson won his 12th game while Luis Matos and David Segui both homered to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-1 win over the Mariners. Ponson (12-5) pitched a complete game seven-hitter, allowing one run with six strikeouts and one walk.

Rockies Kill Off Giants
In Denver, Colorado, Preston Wilson homered twice and drove in six runs to lead the Colorado Rockies to an 11-3 win over the San Francisco Giants in National League action Thursday. Pitcher Darren Oliver also homered for the Rockies, who belted out 13 hits as they swept a two-game series from the National League West division leaders. Wilson had three hits, giving him seven hits and nine RBI in the two games.
Oliver (7-5) went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks, to pick up his fourth straight victory. Chris Stynes had three hits and drove in a run for the Rockies, while Mark Bellhorn and Jay Payton both had two hits and one RBI. Vicente Padilla (8-8) allowed two runs and seven hits in eight innings for the win while New York’s Steve Trachsel (8-6) was pounded for seven runs and eight hits in 1 2/3 innings for the loss.

In Milwaukee, Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning that helped the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-4 win over the Brewers. Jeff Suppan (8-7) worked all nine innings for the Pirates, giving up four runs and eight hits while striking out nine. Keith Ginter smacked a pair of solo homers and Richie Sexson added his 25th of the season that brought the Brewers to within one run in the ninth inning.
