TRIVANDRUM, 16 July 2003 — Prices of essential commodities have shot up in Kerala as nearly 100,000 trucks and commercial vehicles went on an indefinite strike from midnight Monday demanding the recent tax hike to be withdrawn.
Civil Supplies Minister G. Karthikeyan said elaborate arrangements were made by the government agencies to maintain supply and control the prices in the state, which heavily depends on the neighboring states for vegetables and food grains. However, the prices have almost doubled in markets across the state since the strike began.
Officials said they have been instructed to invoke provisions of the Essential Commodities Act to seize the vehicles and ensure supply if the strike prolonged.
