JEDDAH, 27 July 2003 — Welding is an ordinary job done with the use of a glowing torch to put two metals together, right?
Wrong. It is a highly technical job that, when done improperly, could result in accidents.
Engineer Modesto Segovia, a consultant at the Saudi Industrial Tools Corporation (Sitaco), stressed this point in a lecture before members of the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) at the Sofitel Hotel on Friday, explaining that many costly mistakes happen because of lack of knowledge of the intricacies of welding.
Segovia explained the wisdom of choosing the proper power source before undertaking any welding project, metals used in welding, proper equipment and processes, safety in the workshop, and briefly explained laser welding which is the latest in the industry.
“Welding is truly a highly-technical job in the mechanical engineering profession because you have to analyze a lot of things. There are so many different metals to be welded and a lot of factors to consider like the welding process, welding machines and welding consumables,” he said.
“For ordinary people welding may only involve steel, but it reality it involves a lot of metals,” he explained.
