LONDON, 30 July 2003 — Britain will send a smaller team to next month’s world athletics championships in Paris after a spate of injuries but it will include Jonathan Edwards, Kelly Holmes and Mark Lewis-Francis, UK Athletics said yesterday. Edwards missed last weekend’s British trials but gets an automatic place as world champion after his triple jump gold in Edmonton two years ago and will relish another chance to face world indoor champion Christian Olsson of Sweden.
Holmes has been chosen for the 1500 meters despite suffering from a recurring calf injury and will hope to be fit in time. “I pride myself on my record at the major championships. I’m one of the few Brits to have won a medal at every one and I’ll be doing all I can to ensure this injury does not keep me from achieving success in the 1500 meters,” she said.
Lewis-Francis joins Dwain Chambers and Darren Campbell in the 100 meters with Campbell — Olympic silver medalist at the Sydney Olympics — also making the team for the 200 after edging out world indoor champion Marlon Devonish.
Julian Golding and Christian Malcolm complete the 200 line-up after finishing first and second at the trials.
