SANAA, 30 July 2003 — The families of about 200 Islamists detained in Yemen on suspicion of terrorism links, some of them held without trial for two years or more, appealed yesterday to President Ali Abdullah Saleh for their release.

“We ask you to release our children and Islamist brothers detained by the state security services,” they wrote in a message to the president, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.

In mid-July, Interior Minister Rashad Al- Alimi told Parliament about 200 Islamists accused of links to attacks in Yemen would be brought to trial.
