ISLAMABAD: People in Pakistan’s Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces experienced a 5.8-magnitude earthquake on Saturday which originated in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region.

Pakistan is located in a seismically active area where several tectonic plates meet, making the country prone to frequent earthquakes.

The northern and western regions of Pakistan, especially areas along the boundary with India and Afghanistan, are particularly susceptible to seismic activity.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake had a depth of 196 kilometer and it hit region at 9:02pm.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said in a brief statement it was in contact with all district administrations to determine the quake’s impact.

“The PDMA control room has not yet received any information about any loss of life or property,” the statement said. “The emergency operation center of the PDMA is in continuous communication with all district administrations of the province.”

Pakistan has endured some devastating earthquakes in the past which include the 2005 and 2013 quakes in Kashmir and Balochistan, respectively, that caused massive loss of life and property.
