BOSTON, 27 August 2003 — Pedro Martinez continued his domination of Seattle with six solid innings and David Ortiz homered and drove in four runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to an 8-1 drubbing of the Mariners in the American League Monday. Martinez (10-3) was still feeling the effects of a throat infection that caused him to miss his last start but he was still too strong for the Mariners.
It was his 12th consecutive victory over the Mariners, currently the longest winning streak in the majors. His ERA against Seattle in that time is 1.00. Martinez gave up one run on six hits Monday while striking out four and walking two as the Red Sox completed a four-game series sweep.
Bronson Arroyo made his major league debut after Martinez left and picked up a save with three shutout innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts. Ortiz clubbed his 20th homer of the season for Boston and had two hits and two runs scored in addition to his four RBI.
Nomar Garciaparra had three hits and drove in a run for the Red Sox. Todd Walker had two hits and drove in a run and Bill Mueller drove in two runs.
Athletics 8 Blue Jays 6
In Toronto, Miguel Tejada and Erubiel Durazo homered to help the Oakland Athletics edge the Blue Jays 8-6. Tejada had three hits and drove in two runs while Terrence Long had four hits and one RBI as the A’s moved into a tie for first place in the AL West with Seattle. Ted Lilly (7-9) went 6 1/3 innings for the win, allowing three runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Keith Foulke recorded the last five outs for his 34th save of the season. Cory Lidle (11-11) gave up seven runs on nine hits in four innings to take the loss, striking out one and walking three. Josh Phelps cracked a three-run homer for Toronto while Chris Woodward had three hits and one RBI.
Yankees 5 Orioles 2
In New York, Andy Pettitte scattered 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings as the Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2. Pettitte (16-7) allowed one run with six strikeouts and one walk. Mariano Rivera came on to get the last four outs for his 28th save of the season.
Alfonso Soriano had four hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs for the Yankees, who salvaged a split of the four-game series. Derek Jeter had New York’s other RBI. Damian Moss (10-9) was the loser.
Hernandez Pitches Complete Game in Expos Win
In Montreal, Livan Hernandez scattered eight hits in pitching his league-leading seventh complete game of the season to inspire the Montreal Expos to a crushing 12-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Monday.
Hernandez (14-7) allowed one run, struck out nine and walked one in pitching the 30th complete game of his career in front of a crowd of 30,501, the largest in Montreal since May 24. Vladimir Guerrero homered and drove in four runs for the Expos while Wil Cordero had two hits and drove in three runs. Jose Macias drove in two runs for the Expos and Jose Vidro added two hits, scored two runs and drove in another. Randy Wolf (12-9) had the shortest outing of his major league career, lasting 1 2/3 innings.
Brewers 10 Reds 6
In Cincinnati, Bill Hall homered, had four hits and drove in three runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-6 win over the Reds. Geoff Jenkins, Wes Helms and Mark Smith also homered for the Brewers while Royce Clayton added two hits, one RBI and scored two runs.
Matt Kinney (9-9) allowed four runs on six hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and no walks to get the win. Danny Kolb picked up the last out for his 12th save of the season. Aaron Harang (4-4) gave up six runs on eight hits in five innings to take the loss. Dernell Stenson and Stephen Smitherman homered for the Reds.
Diamondbacks 11 Padres 8
In Phoenix, Alex Cintron and Robby Hammock homered to guide the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 11-8 triumph over the San Diego Padres. Cintron had two RBI and three hits while Matt Kata had three hits and two RBI. Luis Gonzalez added two hits and one RBI. Randy Johnson (4-6) went five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks, for the win. Mike Mantei claimed the last five outs for his 20th save of the season.
Jake Peavy (9-10) went two innings, giving up six runs on six hits with one strikeout and four walks. Mark Loretta drove in three runs for San Diego while Rondell White, Phil Nevin and Sean Burroughs all had two hits and one RBI.
