There are many people in this country who live difficult lives on incomes below the poverty line. This has led me to make some points related to our creating a society based on equality, which will be the first step toward much-needed reform.
The government, as well as society at large, has responsibilities to do what needs to be done. I propose various actions on the part of both society and government. The government should do some serious research into poor citizens who live below the poverty line and have no one to assist them. The government could also provide monthly allowances for the physically handicapped, the elderly and widows; the idea here is to keep them from begging and from having to rely on charity. Ration cards for low income citizens should also be provided.
Providing economical housing for the poor should also be a government responsibility; every citizen is entitled to comfortable housing; the size of the houses would of course vary depending on the number who live in them. We have a lot of empty land in the Kingdom and we are a large country with a very small population having its own housing. The reason is the exorbitant price of land and also the high cost of construction. The government certainly has a role here. It should provide interest-free loans on a 20-year installment plan for investors who are interested in this sector.
Also, what about unemployed Saudis who are unable to support themselves? How can we help to protect their dignity? The government should provide a salary for them until they can find other employment — as is done in other developed countries. Society could participate in charitable projects by taking care of those inside the Kingdom rather than always rushing to help those who are outside. Why don’t they sponsor an orphan? People might also pay their zakat to the poor in the country and provide relief to their fellow citizens.
