Diet, KAMA Rockets Steal Show in RKH-MHBA Tilt

RIYADH, 5 September 2003 — KAMA Rockets marched into the semifinal round of the ongoing RKH-MHBA Inter-department Basketball Tournament held at the RKH SkyDome after defeating Nursing Dept. in extra period 101-94.

James Remulta of the KAMA Rockets scored 28 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals together with Yousuf with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, teaming up with Alsado who had 13 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist.

Topscoring for the Nursing cagers was Ferdie Ligan with 20, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal to his credit. Francis Monge added 15 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist. Other contributors for Nursing were Erlie Gonzales with 12 points, Rohel Navarro with 11 points, Boy Yabut adding 10 points and Tadeo knocking in 8 points to his credit.

In the second game Diet aces beat Medical Records Dept. 95-90. Jonal Lopez led Diet with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 block shots.

Diet’s point guard Leo Santos finished the game with 16 points 1 rebound and 5 assists.

Diet aces’ playing coach Julius Sespene played an instrumental role in much of the game, scoring all his 12 points in the three point arch plus 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Philip Reyes who topscored for Medical Records with 21 points, 6 points, and 3 assists fouled out with seconds left in the ballgame followed by Dick Jacinto with 17 points, Don Payang 12 points and Tong Esperame with 14 points to this credit.

Diet aces rolled into another win earlier, demolishing Safari Co. 89-71 on Thursday.

Diet’s Dennis Cacal had his best game scoring 16 points and 6 rebounds for his team. Another fine performance came from Diet’s point guard, Leo Santos, scoring 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Fred Santiago made 12 points to his credit and 6 rebounds.

Teddy Cruz pulled down 13 rebounds to his marker and helped out his team with his 10 baskets.

Safari gave Diet team a run for their money with their fast plays and steady offense throughout the game.

Playing coach Jess Santiago led his team making 15 points, 3 rebounds. Andres “Big Boy” Soriano along with Quizon contributed 11 points each while point guard Pascua helped out Safari scoring 10 points for his team.

Robert Acierto scored 8 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, Oliver Chin with 5 points and Calpe with 4 points, 5 rebounds.

In the 38 and above category, Visayan Selection coached by Jun Pacheco had an easy 15-point win over the Hatco team 85-70. Herrera led his team with 18 points, 1 rebound and 6 assists.

Vic Bueta contributed pulling down 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 points to his credit. It was a lopsided game for the Visayan selection who were up by as much as 30 points at the end of the third quarter.

Hatco’s Almaden led with 25 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. He was followed by Sealongo with 16 points, and 9 rebounds.

Dental fighters piloted by Badawi defeated Prince Sultan team 88-76 to solidify their bid to enter the semifinals in the event at the SkyDome. Badawi had a monster game scoring 37 big points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Richard Dayanan made 18 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists while Sultan contributed 16 points, 7 rebounds and dished out 3 assists to help Badawi and Dayanan defeat the stubborn Prince Sultan team.

Prince Sultan were led by Catacutan who contributed 27 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal. He got support from Bananola and Mendoza scoring 14 and 10 points respectively. Nonan had 11 rebounds and 10 basket points.

Nursing squad defeated Medical Records 83-68. Ferdie Ligan of the Nursing team led with 30 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block. Erlie Gonzales and Francis Monge contributed 18 and 14 points respectively while Caloy Balisi and Tadeo each had 9 points apiece. J. Tolentino scored 18 points for Medical Records along with his 2 rebounds and 6 steals. Philip Reyes and Dick Jacinto each had 13 points while Tong Esperame made 8 points, 6 rebounds and an assist. Team Standings for the Inter Department Category shows KAMA on top with 5-1 win-loss record followed closely by the Medical Records with 5-2.
