DUBAI, 23 September 2003 — A group of 450 Iraqi refugees left Saudi Arabia yesterday to return to Iraq after spending 12 years in a camp in Rafha, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said.
“The fourth group of 450 refugees will return to Basra (southern Iraq) on Tuesday,” Maamun Mohsen, UNHCR spokesman for the Gulf region, told AFP yesterday.
Including this group, more than 1,200 Iraqi refugees, out of 5,233 refugees in the Rafha camp, will have been repatriated since the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in April, he said.
Their repatriation was voluntary, said Mohsen, speaking by telephone from Kuwait.
