JEDDAH, 6 October 2003 — A seminar will be held in Makkah tomorrow as part of a national program to enlighten the public on the need to shun extremism in religion, Islamic Affairs Minister Saleh Al-Asheikh said. “Moderation is one of the hallmarks of Islam,” he said.
The minister said extremism would encourage people to do things that Islam prohibits. “Lack of proper understanding of the Qur’anic teachings is one of the main reasons for the appearance of extremism,” he said.
The seminar will be held on the sidelines of the 25th King Abdul Aziz International Qur’an Competition organized by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
