HYDERABAD, 8 October 2003 — At least 18 people died yesterday when a boat packed with farmers and schoolchildren was sucked into a whirlpool in a river in southern India, officials said.
The boat capsized as it plied between two islands in the Krishna River near Nagyalanka in Andhra Pradesh state, 300 kilometers (185 miles) east of the provincial capital Hyderabad, officials said.
“Eighteen bodies have been recovered and around 10 people are still missing,” said Sampat Kumar, the senior administrator for the Krishna district where the accident took place.
“Between 50 and 60 people were on the boat when it got trapped in a whirlpool. Many of them swam to shore,” Kumar said by telephone.
