NEW YORK, 18 October 2003 — The New York Rangers failed to overturn their winless start to the season after they played a scoreless draw with the Atlanta Thrashers in National Hockey League action on Thursday.
The result gave the Thrashers, who were 4-0 against New York last season, their best start at 2-0-2. Atlanta fired 30 at New York netminder Mike Dunham while Pasi Nurminen stopped 29 shots in the visitors’ goal.

In St. Paul, Minnesota, Colorado Avalanche thrashed the Wild 5-2 thanks to goals from Andrei Nikolishin, Peter Forsberg, John-Michael Liles, Milan Hejduk and newcomer Teemu Selanne.
Red Wings 3 Canucks 2
In Detroit, Ray Whitney tallied a minute from time on a backhander from the slot to give the Red Wings a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Markus Naslund scored a minute into the game for Vancouver, with Marek Malik adding another goal.
Devils 2 Maple Leafs 2
In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Sergei Brylin scored with just two seconds on the clock to give the Devils a 2-2 tie with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have yet to win in three outings this season.
Lightning 5 Coyotes 1
In Tampa, Brad Lukowich, Martin St. Louis, Jassen Cullimore, Pavel Kubina and Fredrik Modin scored as the Lightning thumped the Phoenix Coyotes 5-1.
Mike Johnson tallied for Phoenix to deny goalie Nikolai Khabibulin a shutout.

In Columbus, Rick Nash and newcomer Todd Marchant got second-period goals to give the Blue Jackets a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Marc Denis turned aside 30 shots in the Jackets goal.

In Montreal, the rejuvenated Canadiens got goals from Andrei Markov, Richard Zednik, Jason Ward and Mike Ribeiro in a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Predators 4 Blues 1
In Nashville, Marek Zidlicky, Dan Hamhuis, Vladimir Orszagh and Andreas Johansson tallied as the Predators roughed up the St. Louis Blues 4-1.
Oilers 4 Sabres 1
In Edmonton, rookie Raffi Torres had a goal and an assist as the Oilers thumped the Buffalo Sabres 4-1. Ethan Moreau, Ales Hemsky and local hero Fernando Pisani also tallied for Edmonton.
Sharks 0 Flyers 0
In San Jose, the Sharks and Philadelphia Flyers posted the second scoreless tie of the night despite combining for 53 shots. Shutouts went to the Flyers’ Jeff Hackett and San Jose’s Evgeni Nabokov.
