TOKYO, 3 November 2003 — Asian champions China outgunned four-time defending champions Cuba for their second straight win in the World Cup women’s volleyball tournament yesterday.
The Chinese, who had to be satisfied with the silver medal to Cuba in the 1990 and 1998 worlds, 1991 World Cup and the 1996 Olympics, gained sweet revenge with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 victory in Kagoshima, western Japan. Earlier in the day, the Dominican Republic, wild card entrants, drew the first blood when they shocked European champions Poland 25-21, 25-17, 25-27, 25-21.
In Tokyo, world silver medalists the United States powered past Argentina 25-11, 25-14, 25-14 , while world champions Italy downed South Korea 25-14, 25-19, 25-17, both for a second straight win.
