JEDDAH, 4 November 2003 — Businessmen selling genuine automotive spare parts estimate their annual losses at some SR1 billion. The loss is due to the sale of fake spare parts.

Anwar Shaban, regional manager of Abdullatif Jameel Company, told Eqtisadiah, a sister publication of Arab News, that the company’s losses because of fake spare parts amounted to SR150 million a year.

The company has joined efforts with other car companies and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to put an end to the problem. Fake parts are a danger not only to car companies and dealers but also to the country’s economy.

The first thing Abdullatif Jameel Company did, according to Shaban, was to teach ministry officials how to distinguish between genuine and fake spare parts and to understand the damage resulting from using fake parts.
