634 Arrested in First Week

JEDDAH, 5 November 2003 — The anti-begging department has arrested 634 people this Ramadan. They include toy vendors outside mosques as well as children peddling their wares at traffic lights, according to Al-Madinah newspaper. All of them “create inconveniences for pedestrians as well as drivers,” the paper said. The arrests were made by mobile squads from the department at various times of the day and all over town, it added.
