EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey, 17 November 2003 — Martin Brodeur produced another goaltending masterclass as the New Jersey Devils dismissed local rivals the New York Rangers 5-0 in NHL action on Saturday.
Brodeur, overlooked as playoff MVP during the Devils’ Stanley Cup triumph last season, made 18 saves to earn his 67th career shut out.
Goals from Scott Niedermayer, Jay Pandolfo, Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Rafalski and Christian Berglund extended the Devils’ unbeaten streak this season to nine games. The result allowed Brodeur to move ahead of Toronto’s Ed Balfour at the top of the active shutout leaders chart.

The Blues’ Czech-born center Pavel Demitra grabbed the game-winning goal, steering a shot off the left shoulder of Kings goalie Roman Cechmanek with 4:38 left in the first period.

At Boston, Brian Ralston’s goal with 45 seconds left in overtime gave the Bruins a come-from-behind-win. Rolston lifted the puck over Canucks goalie Dan Cloutier to secure Boston’s fourth straight victory.

At Ottawa, Montreal’s goalie Jose Theodore made 39 saves to set up the Canadiens’ win.
Goals from Jason Spezza and Wade Redden hauled Ottawa back into the game at 2-2 after Jan Bulis and Donald Audette had opened the scoring for Montreal.

At Philadelphia, a four-goal blitz in the final period helped extend the Flyers’ home unbeaten streak to nine games.

At Carolina, Dainius Zubrus’ power-play goal with 2:13 remaining in the game snatched a win for Washington. Zubrus’ seventh of the season was just reward for Capitals goaltender Olaf Kolzig.

At Pittsburgh, Valeri Bure and Kristian Huselius combined to build a three-goal lead for Florida which the Penguins could never recover. Bure and Huselius added second period goals to an opener from Olli Jokinen.

At Nashville, the Predators held off a late rally from the New York Islanders. Martin Erat scored one and set up two more, while Vladimir Orszagh and Marek Zidlicky also netted as Nashville built a 3-0 cushion.

At Minnesota, Steve Yzerman retrieved a point for Detroit with a goal 7:42 from the end of the third period after Pavel Datsyuk had been stopped on a penalty shot.

At Colorado, two goals from the Avalanche in 50 seconds midway through the second period ended the hopes of the Dallas Stars. Teemu Selanne scored on a power play and Steve Konowalchuk made it 3-0 as Dallas went six games without a win.

At Edmonton, Ryan Smyth scored off a pass from Mike York with just 16 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Oilers victory. York’s opener for Edmonton was canceled out by Matthew Lombardi for Calgary in the second period.

At San Jose, Patrick Marleau and Nils Ekman scored in the third period to force a tie for the Sharks — but San Jose are still looking for their first win in eight home games this season.
