TORONTO, 26 November 2003 — Ed Belfour made 24 saves to move into fifth place on the all-time wins list as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Vancouver Canucks for the second time in three days with a 2-1 triumph on Monday.

By registering his 408th win, Belfour passed Glenn Hall on the career victory list and is 15 behind Tony Esposito.

Patrick Roy leads with 551.

Mats Sundin and Gary Roberts scored for the Maple Leafs, who went winless in the first five games of their Western swing before beating Vancouver 5-3 on Saturday.

Roberts opened the scoring just 12 seconds into the game, but Brendan Morrison tied the scores before the first period ended with Vancouver’s lone goal.

Sundin fired the game-winner on a slap shot past Johan Hedberg on a power play two minutes into the third period.

Panthers 2 Sabres 1

In Sunrise, Roberto Luongo made 36 saves to lead the Florida Panthers to a 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Stephen Weiss and Mathieu Biron scored the goals for the Panthers, who won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Biron scored past his brother Martin in the Sabres goal, making him the first NHL player to manage the feat since Phil Esposito of the New York Rangers netted against Tony Esposito of the Chicago Blackhawks in 1980. J.P. Dumont’s third period power-play goal was the only shot to get past Luongo.

Capitals 4 Red Wings 1

In Detroit, rookie Rastislav Stana made 38 saves to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-1 upset win over the Red Wings.

Stana became the first goalie from Slovakia to win an NHL game to help the Capitals move into a tie for the fewest points in the NHL (14) with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Jaromir Jagr and Robert Lang both had a goal and two assists for the Capitals, while Dainius Zubrus and Peter Bondra scored the other Washington goals. Kris Draper scored the lone goal for the Wings, losers of two of their last three games.

Stars 5 Coyotes 2

In Dallas, Mike Modano had a goal and two assists to lead the Stars past the Phoenix Coyotes 5-2.

Jason Arnott, Jere Lehtinen, Steve Ott and Stu Barnes scored the goals for the Stars, who were just 1-6-2 in their previous nine games. Cale Hulse and Landon Wilson scored the goals for the Coyotes, who are 0-5-4-1 in their past 10 road games.

Predators 3 Avalanche 2

In Denver, Tomas Vokoun made 34 saves to lead the Nashville Predators past the Colorado Avalanche 3-2. Kimmo Timonen, Marek Zidlicky and Rem Murray scored the goals for the Predators, who improved to 9-10-1-0. Milan Hejduk and Joe Sakic scored the goals for Colorado, which lost its second straight.
