GLASGOW, 1 December 2003 — Scott Harrison, Scotland’s brightest boxing prospect in a generation, has reignited his career after stopping experienced Mexican Manuel Medina in the 11th round to reclaim the WBO featherweight title.
Harrison had lost the belt to the Mexican on a split points decision in July and almost forfeited his chance at regaining it when he was held up in traffic on his way to the bout.
But once he finally got into the ring on Saturday night, the Scot wasted no time, sending Medina to the floor in the first round and building up a solid lead on points.
Medina was always on the defensive but looked set to go the distance before a ferocious onslaught from the Scot in the 10th left Medina down again with right hooks.
The end came 31 seconds into the 11th when Harrison produced a short right which sent the Mexican to the canvas and prompted his corner to throw in the towel.
Harrison, who had reacted to his unexpected defeat in July by employing a nutritionist and transforming his fitness regime, paid tribute to his opponent’s courage.
Harrison’s win made him the first Scot to regain a world title — a feat that proved beyond the country’s former ring heroes Ken Buchanan and Jim Watt. He is expected to defend his title early next year against William Abelyan, an American Armenian.
In the longer-term, Harrison could be on course for a meeting with emerging star Manny Pacquiao.
