ISLAMABAD, 2 December 2003 — The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) is learnt to have decided in principle to boycott parleys with President Gen. Pervez Musharraf being convened next week for holding final round of talks nurturing consensus on the controversial clauses of the Legal Framework Order (LFO).
The MMA leadership has asked the Ulema of its six component parties to refuse the invitation being extended by the government to have a meeting with Gen. Musharraf in their personal capacity, the alliance has said.
According to MMA Deputy Secretary General and Jamaat-e-Islami Punjab President Liaquat Baloch, the government is inviting the Ulema in their personal capacity for discussions and not engaging the MMA in the upcoming dialogue.
He said the MMA Steering Committee was holding a meeting tomorrow in Islamabad in which the alliance’s anti-government movement for not accepting its demands up to the given deadline of Dec. 18 would be discussed.
He reiterated that the MMA would stick to its decision of bringing the LFO into the Parliament for its approval and making any amendment in the constitution through legal and specified manner.
Sources said that MMA was ready to give a vote of confidence to Gen. Musharraf for becoming president and also endorse the indemnity bill for the deeds during the previous military regime, while the alliance leadership has been negating the impression.
